German authorities confirmed that the hostage situation at Hamburg Airport ended Sunday afternoon after about 18 hours of a man driving his car through the airport gates with his 4-year-old daughter inside. The man was arrested, and the girl appeared to be unharmed.
Hamburg police tweeted that "the hostage situation is over. The suspect left the car with his daughter.. and the child appears to be unharmed."
The police also said that "emergency services arrested the man without resistance." The airport in the city in northern Germany was closed to passengers and flights were canceled since Saturday evening when an armed man stormed the airport gate with his car and fired two shots in the air from a weapon, according to the German news agency. The man drove the car directly outside the airport building and stopped it under an airplane.
The authorities said the man's wife had previously contacted them about the kidnapping of a child.
The police said the man, a 35-year-old Turkish citizen, held his daughter inside the car after forcibly taking her from her mother in an ongoing custody battle.
A psychologist negotiated with the man for several hours, and the police said no one was injured during the confrontation after all passengers left the airport.
The girl's mother had also arrived at the airport earlier on Sunday.
On Sunday evening, the police released details about the identity of the hostage-taker, saying he is a Turkish citizen already under investigation for kidnapping his daughter in March 2022, according to the German news agency.
At that time, he had traveled to Turkey with his daughter without permission, but the mother was later able to bring the child back to Germany.
The police did not mention the suspect's name in accordance with German privacy regulations.
Local media reported that the man, who stopped his car next to a Turkish Airlines plane during the standoff, demanded that he and his daughter leave Germany and travel to Turkey.
More than 100 flights were canceled and many planes were rerouted during the 18-hour hostage situation. Thousands of travelers were affected by the confrontation and hundreds were accommodated in nearby hotels.
Police said Sunday afternoon that preparations were underway to resume flight operations as soon as possible.
Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher expressed relief that no one was injured in the incident.
Tschentscher wrote on X, "The hostage situation at Hamburg Airport has ended after long and tragic hours," thanking the police for their efforts.
He added, "I wish the mother, the child, and their family a lot of strength to face this terrible experience."
