The U.S. State Department condemned on Sunday the killing of a Palestinian in the village of Burqa in the West Bank, describing it as "a terrorist act carried out by extremist Israeli settlers." The U.S. government demanded in a statement that those responsible for the death of 19-year-old Qusai Mattan be brought to justice, noting that the suspects have been arrested.
The detention of the suspects in the murder, Yehiel Indor and Elisha Yard, has been extended. The crime attributed to the two, whose detention has been extended for five days, is premeditated or reckless manslaughter, which is considered a racially motivated homicide. Indor, who was seriously injured in the clash with Palestinians, is suspected of having carried out the shooting that led to Mattan's death. Yard, who is considered a key target of the Shabak and was previously the spokesperson for Knesset member Limor Son Har-Melech from the "Otzma Yehudit" party, is suspected of assisting and obstructing the investigation.
The clashes and gunfire occurred on Friday evening on agricultural land belonging to the village of Burqa near Ramallah. Villagers told Haaretz that the Israelis came from the Oz Zion settlement outpost while they were herding sheep, vandalized property, set cars on fire, threw stones at them, and finally opened live fire, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Mattan and injuring four others. The suspects' lawyers claim that the shooting was in self-defense, alleging that dozens of Palestinians who confronted the settlers attempted to execute them, fired fireworks at them, and threw stones.
The U.S. State Department also condemned the attack that occurred yesterday in central Tel Aviv, which resulted in the death of security guard Chen Amir (42 years old), describing it as a terrorist act as well. They stated, "We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and call for an end to these acts of violence and incitement to violence."
