The ambassadors of the European Union member states reached an agreement on a key text to reform immigration policy in Europe during their meeting today, Wednesday, October 4, 2023, in Brussels, ahead of the upcoming summit in Granada, Spain, this Friday.
The law under discussion aims to coordinate a joint response in the event of a large influx of migrants to one of the EU member states, as occurred during the refugee crisis of 2015-2016, allowing, in particular, for the extension of the detention period for migrants at the external borders of the Union.
Negotiations on the text will now need to take place with members of the European Parliament.
