A government report, released today Friday, showed that the number of centenarians in Japan has surpassed 92,000 people for the first time, marking a record for the 53rd consecutive year.
The Ministry of Health in Tokyo announced that the number of people aged over one hundred has increased by 1,613 compared to the previous year, reaching 92,139 people.
According to the latest survey, women make up nearly 88% of the total centenarians.
The average age for women in Japan is around 87 years, while for men it is about 81 years.
Japan has seen a rapid increase in the number of centenarians since the government first recorded 153 people over the age of 100 in 1963. According to official figures, the number exceeded ten thousand in 1998 and fifty thousand in 2012.
Japan faces a growing demographic burden after decades of rapid aging and declining birth rates. The pace of aging in Japan, which has the third-largest economy in the world, is faster than any other industrialized nation.
The population of Japan is shrinking at a record pace, having decreased by 801,000 people last year compared to the previous year, totaling 122.4 million, the largest decline since data collection began.
