Toronto is expected to experience thunderstorms today, Tuesday, as the city wraps up the wettest July on record.

Environment Canada predicts that the chances of rain this afternoon will reach 60% with the risk of a thunderstorm. Hot and humid conditions will return, with the national weather agency forecasting a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, feeling closer to 36 degrees Celsius with the humidity.

Bill Coulter, a meteorologist at CP24, said there will be "some sunshine" in the morning.

Coulter added that "the heat and humidity of today will be used as fuel for rain and thunderstorms," noting that the active weather will arise from "a low-pressure system moving southward."

Rain may continue into the evening hours.

A series of severe weather systems this month have caused record amounts of rainfall in Toronto for July.

On July 16, the city experienced nearly 100 mm of rain in a short burst, leading to widespread flooding and power outages across Toronto. Parts of Don Valley Parkway and Lakeshore Boulevard were closed after flash flooding completely washed out the roads, stranding several motorists.

Dave Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada, told CTV News last week that the city recorded 208 mm of rain since the beginning of July, surpassing the previous record of 193 mm set in 2008. Phillips added that the city typically sees about 76 mm of rain during the month.

Phillips said, "The number of days with rain wasn’t high, but the systems seem to be moisture-laden. We have seen more than one weather system with those large batches of heavy rain when we usually find such a system every two years."
