A huge global technical outage has impacted banking systems worldwide, possibly in Canada as well. The outage affected Microsoft users around the world today, Friday.
Banks and other financial institutions from Australia to India and South Africa warned customers about service disruptions, according to news reports. Experts suggest that people are not making bank transfers or conducting other banking services today.
The incident grounded flights and halted media broadcasts on Friday. Porter Airlines and many other airlines operating from Pearson Airport were affected by the outage. There are reports indicating that hospital systems are also impacted.
Microsoft users worldwide, many of them in India, reported a massive outage in services.
The cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike stated that its “Falcon Sensor” software is causing disruptions to Microsoft Windows. CrowdStrike confirmed that it was not a security incident or a cyber attack. Reports indicate that CrowdStrike has identified the issue but it takes time to implement a fix.
So far, there are some reports of banking service disruptions in Canada, according to social media posts.
One Canadian wrote on X, “Today, I woke up without my salary.”
Another person wrote, “TD is experiencing a service outage – I assume it’s (because of) Microsoft.”
TD Canada Trust has a message on their EasyWeb login page: “Please be aware that we are currently experiencing higher than normal call volumes today in our contact centers. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience.”
