The Supreme Court of Canada has announced its approval for the authorization letters of Doug Ford's Cabinet to remain confidential, and on this basis, the court reached an agreement with the federal government on this matter.
The Supreme Court of Canada agreed with the Government of Ontario that Doug Ford's private authorization letters sent to the Cabinet are exempt from all freedom of information laws.
The ruling came about 6 years after the Conservative government and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBC
following 2018, after Ford was first elected as mayor of Ontario.
CBC requested the messages, numbering 23 letters, under the Freedom of Information Act, but they were denied.
The government referred to cabinet exemptions and stated at the time that public disclosure of the letters would cause
the disclosure of what is communicated between the government and the Governor.
