General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Sudanese Army, said on Thursday that the rebellion of the Rapid Support Forces targeted the stability of Sudan and the security of its citizens.
Al-Burhan stated, "We will work to preserve the unity of the country and ensure the security of the Sudanese citizen," calling on the rebels to lay down their arms.
He added, "War crimes have been committed in Khartoum and Darfur, and those responsible must be held accountable."
He continued, "The war in Sudan serves specific individuals and will end soon," noting that the current war threatens to fragment Sudan.
Al-Burhan's remarks came after his return from Egypt following a one-day visit, during which he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Sudanese Army Commander affirmed in his speech following the meeting that "the armed forces do not seek to remain in power," and that "what the army seeks is to hold free and fair elections."
He added, "We seek to complete the democratic transitional path until the people of Sudan choose who will govern them."
