The sentencing hearing is expected to begin today for a Dutch man convicted of harassing a British Columbia teenager Amanda Todd in the years leading up to her suicide.

The Supreme Court jury convicted Aiden Coban last month of extortion, harassment, communicating with a youth to commit a sexual offense, and possession and distribution of child pornography.

Prosecutor Louise Kenworthy also told the jury before deliberations began that a "treasure trove of information" linked Coban to Todd's harassment, including information found on two hard drives seized from his home.

Coban's lawyers, who was extradited from the Netherlands to face the charges, argued that the evidence did not prove he was the person behind many of the online accounts used to harass the teenager from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Todd's mother, Carol Todd, said she will make a statement during the sentencing session, which is expected to last until the end of the week. Todd was 15 years old when she died by suicide in October 2012, shortly after posting a YouTube video describing how she was tortured by an online predator, using flashcards to tell her story in the video that has since been viewed by millions, highlighting the harms of online bullying and cyberbullying. Coban was not charged in relation to Todd's death.

Before Coban’s extradition, a Dutch court sentenced him to nearly 11 years in prison for similar online crimes after a trial in Amsterdam in 2017, where he was accused of online abuse of 34 girls and five gay men.

That court heard that Coban, in his mid-forties, pretended to be a boy or girl and convinced his victims to perform sexual acts in front of a webcam, then posted the images online or blackmailed them by threatening to do so.

He was convicted of fraud and online extortion and sentenced to the maximum penalty for what Dutch legal authorities described as "the severe consequences of his behavior" on the lives of his victims.
