Thousands of fans gathered in the streets of downtown Halifax on Saturday as Nathan MacKinnon brought the Stanley Cup to his hometown in a parade.

Locals had been following Nathan's hockey journey long before he joined the Colorado Avalanche in 2013, then the Halifax club where MacKinnon won a memorial cup while playing for the Halifax Mooseheads.

One attendee at the event said, "It's an incredible feeling to be back in Nova Scotia, I already had the chance to see him win it live in Tampa Bay earlier this year."

Meanwhile, in an old fire truck, MacKinnon and his family kicked off the event at noon with a parade, starting from the Scotiabank Center. Then they followed the route along Spring Garden Road, South Park, and Sackville, ending with a gathering outside City Hall.

Mike Savage, mayor of Halifax, said in a recent interview with CTV News: "We are proud of our local boy who won the Stanley Cup to bring the memorial trophy with him. It will be a great celebration."

The beloved hockey star sat down with Paul Hollingsworth from CTV after the parade where he shared how special this moment was for him, saying: "It's amazing, you know? To come home and share it with all of you guys, it's a dream."

While speaking with CTV News on Friday, MacKinnon's former hockey coach said Saturday's events would be the final chapter of the championship celebration.
