The Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sánchez wrote to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, expressing their deep concern over the deterioration of the situation in the Gaza Strip, according to the British news agency "PA Media", today Wednesday.
In a joint letter, Varadkar and Sánchez called for an urgent review to ensure whether Israel is complying with its human rights obligations under the EU-Israel trade agreement.
They described the expanded Israeli military operation in the Rafah area as constituting a "serious and imminent threat" that the international community must "urgently confront."
In their letter, published on Wednesday morning, the two leaders asked the European Commission to propose measures that the European Union should take if it sees that Israel is violating its obligations under the EU-Israel trade agreement.
