Saskatchewan is expanding eligibility for the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to residents aged 18 and older.
The province said anyone who received a third dose at least four months ago will become eligible for the fourth dose on August 15.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is making its public booking system available on August 12 and clinics will begin offering the shot on August 15.
Appointments can be booked online or by phone by calling 1-833-Sask-VAX (1-833-727-5829)
Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Health Officer, said, "COVID-19 is still spreading in Saskatchewan and other states, which is why our province is expanding access." "All COVID-19 vaccines approved in Canada are considered safe and our preliminary data shows the second booster provides additional protection."
Currently, vaccination appointments are available through the SHA, Indigenous Services Canada, the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority, and participating pharmacies. Walk-in clinics are also available.
The second booster dose was previously available to all residents aged 50 and over, and anyone aged 18 or older living in long-term care facilities, personal care homes, and supported living facilities.
The province said COVID-19 immunity has been proven to wane over time, and booster doses have been shown to provide increased protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
COVID-19 vaccines for children are also available for children aged six months to five years.
Residents aged five years or older are eligible for the first two doses, and residents aged 12 and over are eligible for a third dose, four months after the second dose.
