Certain parts of the body can give you a good indicator of any potential health problems, and this can include your skin, eyes, mouth, feet, nails, and even your tongue, where signs of various health issues appear on the tongue.

Often, some things like ulcers, spots, bumps, or redness are harmless, but sometimes, if they do not go away, they may give you some clues about your health and any deceptive conditions you may have.

A healthy tongue has a warm pink color indicating that everything is fine, but any of these changes might mean something might not be right. Below are some changes on your tongue you should be aware of.

White Spots

Noticing white spots or a creamy appearance on your tongue can indicate either thrush or a fungal infection. WebMD states: "This often occurs after illness or medications disturb the balance of bacteria in your mouth."

White patches that look speckled might mean your immune system is attacking the tissues in your mouth, adding: "If you see solid, flat, white areas that cannot be rubbed off, it may be cancer-associated leukoplakia."

Tongue Ulcers

Syphilis is said to cause ulcers, also known as sores, which can be observed on the lips, gums, the back of the mouth near the tonsils, and on the tongue.

These sores indicate the primary stage of infection, and these small sores start as small red spots then grow into larger open sores with varying colors of red, yellow, or gray.

Burning Sensation

The feeling as if you have stuck your tongue on something very hot causing a mild taste in your mouth is known as burning mouth syndrome, "this might mean a nerve problem in your tongue".

Some health issues such as dry mouth, infections, acid reflux, and diabetes may also cause it; for some people, acidic foods like pineapple as well as toothpaste, mouthwash, candy, and gum also cause mouth burning.

Painful and Red Tongue

Suffering from tongue inflammation and redness may mean you have a severe vitamin B12 deficiency, and a red tongue is synonymous with vitamin B12 deficiency which may make it appear red-colored.

Iron deficiency can also cause tongue swelling and painful mouth ulcers, and hemoglobin deficiency in the blood also causes the tongue to appear pale and smooth.

If you notice any of these changes on your tongue, it is strongly advised to visit your doctor or dentist.
