Russia announced on Friday that it will ban an additional 62 Canadian personalities from entering its territory in response to the recent Canadian sanctions targeting Russian figures.

Among the Canadians targeted by the new sanctions are political and military officials, clergy, and journalists.

This decision was made "due to the very aggressive nature of the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's regime" and in response to measures aimed at "insulting not only the multinational and multi-religious people in Russia but also Orthodox believers worldwide," the Russian Foreign Ministry explained in a statement.

Canada has imposed a series of sanctions on Russia in recent months due to its ongoing military invasion of Ukraine for five and a half months.

Among the Russian figures targeted by the Canadian sanctions is the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, who openly supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The individuals on whom Russia announced sanctions were characterized by "malicious activities in the war against the 'Russian world' and traditional Russian values," according to the Russian Foreign Ministry in its statement.

Among those included in the new Russian sanctions list are the spokesperson for the Canadian Foreign Ministry, Adrian Blanchard, the Catholic priest and editor of the magazine "Convivium," Raymond J. De Souza, the head of Canadian Armed Forces intelligence, Michael Charles Wright, several advisors to Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, and the gay activist Brent Hawkes.

The Russian army invaded Ukraine on February 24 and now controls a fifth of its territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia occupied and annexed in 2014, and areas in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine occupied by Moscow-backed separatists in the same year.

This ongoing assault on Ukraine for five and a half months has sparked unprecedented condemnation and sanctions from Western countries against Russia, which responded with similar measures.
