A new state of emergency was issued Wednesday afternoon after reports of a person armed with a knife in Wakaw, Saskatchewan. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police believe the sighting may be connected to the fatal stabbing incidents that took place in James Smith Cree Nation. The individual is believed to have been traveling in a stolen 2008 white Chevrolet with Saskatchewan license plate 953 LPL.

The car was reported stolen around 2:10 PM on Wednesday and was last seen traveling in Wakaw on Cemetery Road. The RCMP stated in a press release, "The direction of travel is unknown." Wakaw is located about 100 kilometers southwest of the First Nation where all but one of the stabbing incidents occurred.

In the same context, the police issued instructions for anyone in the Wakaw area to exercise caution and avoid approaching suspicious individuals or picking up strangers in vehicles.

Saskatchewan has remained in a state of civil emergency since Sunday as the manhunt for Miles Sanderson, the prime suspect in the James Smith Cree Nation mass stabbing, continues. Police said 11 people were killed and 19 others injured in the wave of stabbings.

During a somber press conference, the head of one of Saskatchewan’s leading Indigenous organizations revealed he lost two loved ones in the tragic stabbing attacks on James Smith Cree Nation. Arkand said his sister Bonnie Burns (48) and nephew Gregory Burns (28) were among those stabbed, and that Bonnie’s two young adopted children witnessed the tragedy, saying: "One of the boys was hiding behind a high chair watching everything."
