Rogers announced that the 5G service is now available to all light rail riders in the heart of Toronto.

In a media statement today, Monday, representatives of the telecommunications company said that customers of all major Canadian wireless carriers can connect to the 5G network to talk, send text messages, and stream on the TTC subway system.

The service extends to all stations and tunnels in the downtown area (between Bloor Young and Spadina, as well as Dupont station), as well as 13 stations between Kelly and Castle Frank, in addition to the tunnels between St. George and Young stations.

This announcement comes a day ahead of schedule, as the federal deadline granted to Rogers to implement the expanded service for all mobile customers was originally set for Tuesday. Rogers customers have enjoyed 5G connectivity in the aforementioned stations and tunnels since August, a decision that sparked outrage in the telecommunications sector, especially from competitors Telus and Bell.

Ron McKenzie, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Rogers said, "Our specialized team of technicians designed and delivered an immediate solution that adds capacity, so that Bell and Telus can join the network." "For over 10 years, subway riders have been without mobile services, and the Rogers team is pleased to ramp up our efforts and make 5G a reality for all riders today."

In a statement shared with CP24, Telus representatives said, "We are excited to launch the service for all our customers in the connected TTC subway tunnels and stations. Now, TELUS customers can browse the internet, talk, send text messages, and stay connected and safe while commuting in Toronto. We will work hard to increase the number of covered stations and tunnels in the coming months."

"We would like to thank Minister Champagne for his leadership in ensuring that all wireless carriers have the ability to serve their customers in the Toronto subway system, and that Rogers can no longer delay the deployment of wireless service for all TTC passengers regardless of their professional choice," Bell representatives shared in a statement this afternoon. "Bell looks forward to collaboratively working with our partners to build the remainder of the TTC wireless network."
