At least 15 prisoners were killed and 20 others were injured in a rebellion that took place yesterday, Monday, October 3, 2022, in one of the largest prisons in Ecuador, according to official authorities.
The Prison Administration Department stated that "tactical units continue operations to regain control of the prison," located on the outskirts of Latacunga city, which has witnessed seven massacres related to drug trafficking since February 2021, with more than 400 fatalities in total.
This prison is considered the largest in Ecuador, housing about 4300 inmates.
So far, authorities have failed to control the prisons, where violence is often very brutal, especially since many of the dead are stabbed or slaughtered.
According to official figures, the overcrowded prisons in Ecuador contain about 35,000 inmates, including a large number of gang members fighting among themselves for control of drug trafficking.
