A report indicates that 80% of Black Canadians experience racism in their workplaces

A recent report, issued by KPMG, stated that the majority of Black Canadians face discrimination and persecution in their workplaces.

The report revealed that 81% of participants in this study who are Black experienced racist practices and discrimination in their workplaces during the past year.

The report also mentioned that Black Canadians feel that Canadian companies and institutions are making progress regarding the commitment they pledged in 2020 to eliminate racism, discrimination, and persecution against Black people, and to work on providing an inclusive work environment for everyone and leadership positions. However, about 80% of Black Canadians were subjected to racism specifically in their workplaces during the past year 2023, which represents an increase in persecution and discrimination by 10% compared to before.

Half or more of the participants, at 53%, stated that they experienced less racism than in previous years, while 15% said they experienced the same level of persecution and racism as before in previous years. Additionally, 13% reported that the level of racism they experienced was greater and involved more assaults than before.

On another note, 83% said they felt appreciated, respected, and received the same treatment as their colleagues, with an increase of up to 5% compared to last year. Meanwhile, 73% of Black individuals said they have to work harder to receive the same treatment as other colleagues; to receive the same appreciation and respect.

It is noteworthy that most participants indicated that Black Canadian employees indeed face more economic crises; as 79% of them reported losing their jobs previously.
