The 401 East Highway in Oshawa has reopened after being closed due to a large fire that caused smoke to rise above the highway.

Pedestrians began sharing photos of the thick smoke coming from the location of the incident around 6:30 PM.

Durham Police confirmed that their crews were responding to information about a fire in the area of Curtis Road and Baseline Road West.

It is not yet clear what is burning or how the fire started.

The police said that a media spokesperson will provide further details later this evening.

There is no information yet about any potential injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police tweeted that Highway 401 was closed in both directions between Harmony Road in Oshawa and Highway 418 due to the fire.

Southbound lanes on Highway 418 between Regional Road 2 and Highway 401 were also closed just before 8 PM.

The OPP said that all lanes have been reopened.
