At this time of year, children all over the city wear their new school clothes to return to their classrooms. With this, Edmonton Police remind drivers to slow down while driving, especially in areas with schools, where the speed limit is 30 km/h.

A police sergeant said in this regard: "Edmonton students are returning to classes this week, which means drivers have the responsibility to stay alert and watch the posted speed limits to ensure the safety of our youth. All road users, including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, need to stay alert, avoid distractions, and comply with all traffic rules."

Also, in the last school year, between September 2021 and June 2022, Edmonton Police said officers issued 1145 violations, adding that 75 percent of drivers follow the 30 km/h speed limit.

Herick Fitzgerald, supervisor of the AMA School Safety Patrol program, said: "This is the time when our communities experience an increase in both traffic volume and excited students."
