Starting from June 17, those interested will be able to board the first passenger train powered by green hydrogen in North America.
The "Coradia iLint" train, produced by the French train manufacturing giant "Alstom," will connect the city of Quebec with the city of Baie-Saint-Paul, which is 95 kilometers away, for a four-month pilot period.
The train will also operate from Wednesday to Saturday between June 17 and September 30. Approximately 60 employees will be tasked with operating the train, customer service, maintenance, and other related services.
Since the workers of the Charleroi train are accustomed to working with three European trains of a size similar to the Coradia iLint train, the Charleroi area, where the city of La Malbaie is located, represents an ideal space to test this new technology.
Additionally, the train will be able to run on a private railway network without needing to share the same networks with other railway companies.
This train is a promotional model and has previously operated in France and Germany.
The Quebec government invested 3 million dollars last February to launch this innovative technology, which is a first in North America.
It is noted that green hydrogen burns cleanly and is environmentally friendly, releasing water vapor and condensed water into the air, and it will be produced in Quebec using low-carbon electricity.
