Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly urged Canadians in Morocco to register with Canadian international affairs following the devastating earthquake that struck the country late Friday night.
In a tweet this Saturday morning, Joly said that Canada’s heart is with all those affected by the devastating earthquake, and she stated that Canadians in Morocco who need assistance should contact the federal emergency monitoring and response center, which can provide emergency consular assistance.
The Canadian foreign office stated that it is working to update information regarding the number of Canadians who were in Morocco at the time of the disaster.
The rare powerful earthquake has resulted in the death of more than 1,000 people and injured about 1,200, but these numbers are expected to rise.
The 6.8 magnitude earthquake is the largest to hit the North African nation in 120 years.
