Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reassigned ministers Filomena Tassi and Helena Jaczek in a small internal cabinet shuffle in Rideau Hall on Wednesday.
In a simple swap of cabinet portfolios, Jaczek was appointed the new Minister of Public Services and Procurement in Canada, while Tassi takes on a less prominent role as Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
Trudeau and the two ministers held a media-available ceremony after participating in the brief swearing-in ceremony presided over by Governor General Mary Simon.
There is a minor reorganization of the Liberal frontbench to accommodate Tassi's request to spend more time in Southern Ontario "for family reasons."
Sources told CTV News that this desire stems from a health matter.
Tassi oversaw Canada's vaccine procurement as well as new fighter jets.
Tassi formerly held the position of Canadian Minister of Labour, Minister of Seniors, and Deputy Liberal Leader. "In her new role, Minister Tassi will ensure the continued strength of FedDev Ontario, which in turn will create good jobs for the middle class, drive economic growth in the region, and support small and medium-sized businesses for the benefit of everyone in Southern Ontario."
Wednesday's cabinet change is the first time the Prime Minister has made changes to his cabinet list.
There are currently 38 members in the gender-balanced government, excluding the Prime Minister.
By swapping the roles held by these two ministers, Trudeau maintains his commitment to gender equality and regional representation within the cabinet is unaffected.
The cabinet shuffle comes ahead of the federal government's retreat next week in Vancouver, where Trudeau and his ministers will meet to discuss priorities and set their agenda for the fall.
Parliament is scheduled to reconvene the week starting September 19.
