Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed with his British counterpart Liz Truss during a phone call today the importance of building on the strong relationship between their two countries, particularly addressing ongoing global concerns such as Russian military operations in Ukraine, the uncertainties facing the global economy, energy and food security, climate change, and biodiversity.
During the call, the two sides discussed the ongoing need to work together to strengthen partnerships with developing countries, including within and through the Commonwealth, according to a statement issued by the Canadian Prime Minister's office.
Trudeau confirmed his interest in working closely with Truss to support the successful 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, which Canada will host in Montreal, focusing on nature protection and halting biodiversity loss.
The two leaders affirmed their joint support for efforts to enhance supply chain security and promote free and open rules-based global trade.
Trudeau confirmed Canada's support for the United Kingdom's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and emphasized that ongoing negotiations towards a comprehensive, ambitious, and inclusive free trade agreement between Canada and the United Kingdom remain a priority.
The Canadian Prime Minister renewed his condolences to the people of the United Kingdom following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, noting that both countries, along with many other Commonwealth nations and around the world, share in mourning this great loss.
