Farmers in Essex County are used to not being able to control the weather, but now they have other concerns beyond their control.

Farmer "Craig Chevalier" says he feels the high cost hit of diesel during the farming season.

"Every time you go to the field, you have to burn fuel and you can't get the crop in the ground. Chevalier said, "It's an unavoidable expense."

Gilbolt said, "Many men are watching how much fieldwork or plowing they are doing." It's not just the rising cost of fuel.

And farmers say other expenses are rising. Chevalier said, "Everything has gone up, from the cost of propane and fertilizers to fuel and equipment." Herbicide prices have risen by 10 to 15 percent.

Everything has risen with inflation and supply and demand." Ian Lee, a business professor at Carleton University, says that if interest rates are raised enough, it will cool inflation.

Lee said, "This will hurt borrowers, it will hurt farmers in the short term, but there will be a light at the end of the tunnel." He expects only short-term pain.

Lee said, "I think in a year and a half to two years, things can get back on track." Farmers are also trying to be optimistic."
