Toronto police arrested two people on Friday after a demonstration outside a hotel in downtown Toronto where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was attending a Liberal Party fundraising event.
The police said the arrests were due to property damage – as one of the accused was spray painting the side of the building – and obstructing a peace officer. The police described the demonstration at the time as a "large demonstration" that imposed closures. Many attendees were carrying Palestinian flags.
This comes after an event that Trudeau and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni were scheduled to attend last month at the Ontario Art Gallery, and a demonstration closed the gallery entrance and forced the event to be canceled.
Recently, three people were charged on March 7 after a demonstration outside a Jewish synagogue in the Thornhill area. The demonstration included pro-Palestinian protesters and pro-Israel protesters, with police standing between the two groups to separate them.
Jack Antonio De Tomaso, 25 years old from Toronto, was arrested and charged with assault, and David Menzies, 61 years old from Richmond Hill, was arrested and charged with obstructing a peace officer and breaching peace bonds.
In an interview before the event, Dalia Awad from the Palestinian Youth Movement said protest organizers expected a large turnout because this was the first Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, adding that people had many warnings about the event.
She said, "With AGO's move, people became less interested in it," referring to the gathering outside the art gallery earlier this month
