Halifax Regional Police arrested 21 individuals during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in downtown Halifax on Monday morning, which caused traffic disruption.
Halifax Regional Police say they responded to Hollis Street and the surrounding area shortly after 7 a.m.
The protesters were seen lining part of the intersection and sitting in a circle in the crosswalk, with more than ten police officers photographed at the scene.
Halifax police stated in a press release that officers spoke to the protesters in an attempt to clear the roadway, and police arrested 21 individuals when they refused to leave.
A press release from A15Halifax stated that the demonstration condemned the international economic blockade imposed on Palestine.
Police confirmed that the 21 detainees would be released later on Monday. They will also face charges of obstructing the roadway, and some will face additional charges of failing to use the sidewalk and failing to comply with an officer's directions.
According to the statement, Hollis Street and the final road area are now clear, but a group of 20 to 30 protesters made their way to the police station on Gottingen Street around 11:30 a.m.
The statement said: "We remind the public that while we respect the right to peaceful protest, necessary actions will be taken as needed to ensure public safety."
