From virtual classrooms to daily COVID-19 testing and mandatory masks, this is how children across Canada have endured huge changes in their learning since schools closed in March 2020.

Over the course of seven waves and many variants, more than five million students in elementary and secondary schools across Canada have had to cope with illness or their loved ones contracting the virus.

As they prepare to enter what will be their fourth school year with the pandemic, what will the new 2022-2023 school year look like? So, by taking a look at the shape of the upcoming school year according to British Columbia and Alberta, it will be as follows:

"British Columbia"

After Omicron emerged, the province moved to the protocols in place for other widespread viral illnesses, which include "self-management" where public health officials will focus on responding to larger groups of cases. The province issued the following guidelines as of April 16, 2022:

Masks and other safety guidelines: Masks are optional, as health officials encourage everyone to get vaccinated, stay home when sick, and regularly check for symptoms to ensure children do not go to school while sick. If a student or staff member shows symptoms at school, they will be separated from other students or staff and sent home and the areas used by the individual will be cleaned and disinfected.

When to stay home: Students and staff are asked to stay home if they are sick or have any symptoms of illness, and they are asked to follow provincial guidelines if they believe they may have COVID-19, including self-isolation for at least five days. As for virtual school, online classes will continue to be offered.

"Alberta"

The province lifted all remaining mandatory public health protocols on June 14: Masks and other safety guidelines: Mask wearing and self-isolation are no longer mandatory outside health facilities, recommendations for isolation include isolation for five days from symptom onset and wearing a mask for five days after being indoors with others.

According to the Edmonton School Board, students should stay home when sick, but they are no longer required to use the province's daily health checklist, in addition, children who become ill at school will be sent home, and online learning will be available with designated school boards throughout the province.
