Ottawa: Canada Post stops mail delivery in rural areas because mailboxes are too short!

Residents on a rural road in Ottawa are confused after recently stopping receiving their mail.

Dozens of homeowners on Constance Lake Road near Dunrobin say Canada Post has stopped delivering to roadside mailboxes for weeks.

Jude told CTV News: "Most of the residents on this street, all my neighbors except one, have stopped receiving home delivery service."

Constance Lake Road residents say they were never given a reason for this. After contacting Canada Post several times himself, Jude said he was told his mailbox does not comply with mail height regulations - it is too short.

Canada Post regulations state that rural mailboxes must be between 42 and 45 inches (107-114 cm) above ground level.

Jude says: "I measured my box and it was 37 inches."

Jude was told that when his road was repaved in July 2020, road workers did not raise the mailbox. However, more than two years after no issues were raised about the box height, his mail delivery stopped.

Jude says he contacted the City of Ottawa about the road works. "They said their usual process is to strip the previously existing pavement and repave with the same amount of asphalt. So, there should be no change in the road surface that existed two years ago as it is today."
