Perley Health says Ottawa Police are investigating and reviewing weapons possession and storage policies after finding pistols, rifles, knives, and ammunition in two residences.

In a statement, the long-term care home said "several weapons" were discovered in two separate residences on its Russell Street campus on Friday.

"Upon discovery, Perley Health staff immediately secured these locations and contacted Ottawa Police." Perley Health says three pistols and two knives were found in a long-term care room.

The statement said, "When entering a second residence as part of a security check, staff found 14 pistols and a rifle in an unlocked cabinet, a quantity of ammunition, other firearm equipment, and knives."

"A locked pistol cabinet was also found in the second unit which had been vacant for several days while the apartment tenant was transferred to the hospital."

Perley Health is home to more than 600 seniors and veterans in long-term care and independent apartments.

It has been described as one of the "largest and most advanced long-term care homes" in Ontario.

Perley Health says the health and safety of residents, tenants, staff, and visitors is the "number one priority."

"The safety of the entire Perley Health community is paramount, and we are reviewing all policies related to the possession and storage of weapons on site."
