A member of the Ottawa City Council wishes to have the title "Canadian Capital of Shawarma" given to her city.

Councilor Laura Dudas of Ottawa City Council called on her colleagues today, Wednesday, to support her in a proposal she drafted on this matter.

"The city of Ottawa has nearly 200 shawarma restaurants. It is the element that unites us. Shawarma restaurants are spread everywhere, in rural communities, downtown, in the east, in the west, they are everywhere without exception," according to Laura.

She sees this as an opportunity to recognize shawarma as an economic driver of the city.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Ottawa, Mark Sutcliffe, expressed his admiration for the idea and his intention to support the proposal.

Ottawa, the ultimate shawarma city
"I often joke with my children when we come across those many shawarma restaurants with different names, it is clear that they are part of our culture and give a special character to our city," said the Mayor of Ottawa as he left the city council meeting chamber.

None of the council members wished to reveal their favorite shawarma restaurant, keeping that secret to themselves.

Mark said, "My favorite shawarma? I will never disclose that."

It is noted that a vote on the council member’s proposal is scheduled for the next city council meeting on April 3rd.

Welcome to all competitors
"Other municipalities have until the third of next month to nominate themselves in an effort to win the title and challenge our city," Laura Dudas said, issuing the challenge to other municipalities.

"If there is competition," the speaker added, "there is no doubt that Ottawa will be crowned champion."

"We will eliminate the others from the competition because frankly, I cannot imagine another city with these wonderful shawarma restaurants that the federal capital embraces," concluded Ottawa City Council member Laura Dudas.
