Ottawa has committed $2.8 million to fund organizations that help those facing barriers in learning about sexual and reproductive health.
Yi Win Shao, project coordinator in Montreal for the Canadian Sexual Health Education and Information Council, said there is a severe lack of support for youth, people with disabilities, and Indigenous communities, as her organization deals with the sexual health needs of people with autism and disabled youth who have long been ignored and neglected.
Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced funding for projects by the Sexual Health Education and Information Council and the Calgary Sexuality Centre, saying: "We are talking about people who usually have the most severe needs, but who also face the greatest barriers."
The Sexual Health Education and Information Council is scheduled to receive over $800,000 to help healthcare providers improve the promotion of sexual health for youth with autism and disabilities. The federal government has allocated $45 million over three years, starting in 2021-22, to improve access to sexual and reproductive healthcare support.
