The Canadian capital police issued a statement published on their website regarding their activity in fighting crime, especially in the downtown area, where they said:
That there will be an ongoing increased police presence focused on combating crime and social disorder in the ByWard Market and downtown Rideau.
Noting that the increased presence of officers from frontline police and community officers is organized in collaboration with the Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Commission, OC Transpo, and the city of Ottawa's internal law enforcement service partners.
Adding that officers will continue to take an absolutely zero-tolerance approach to unruly behavior, such as violations of the Liquor License and Control Act, criminal activity, and aggressive panhandling that can negatively impact residents, visitors, and businesses.
Explaining that these community safety initiatives are implemented every weekend during the summer months to ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy these areas in a safer manner.
Police stated that citizens can report incidents online at ottawapolice.ca/report, or by calling the non-emergency number
613-236-1222, extension 7300, or by calling 911 in case of an emergency or ongoing crime.
