As of today, individuals and businesses are no longer able to import handguns  into Canada, with limited exceptions.

The move announced earlier this month aims to accelerate the cornerstone of federal efforts to reduce the number of handguns in the country.

In May, the Liberal government announced a plan to freeze the import, purchase, sale, or transfer of handguns to help curb firearm-related violence.

This measure is part of a broader gun control package that would allow for automatic revocation of firearms licenses from people who commit domestic violence or are involved in criminal harassment, such as stalking, along with increasing maximum penalties for smuggling and trafficking firearms to 14 years from 10.

Last spring, to ensure the rapid implementation of the national handgun freeze, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino introduced regulatory amendments in both the House of Commons and the Senate.

However, the regulations are not expected to come into effect until this fall, and Parliament has not yet approved the accompanying legislative measures.

The change that started today will continue until the permanent freeze is passed in Parliament and comes into effect.
