The police say a driver in Ontario caught using fake license plates is now facing serious charges.
According to Durham police, an officer spotted fake plates under colored plate covers on a car driving through Whitby on Monday.
Traffic police said after stopping the driver, he was charged with a series of “serious charges” including no insurance and driving with a suspended license, adding that the car was impounded for 45 days.
Earlier this summer, Ontario police reminded drivers to renew their license plates, even though it is now free.
While Ontario again canceled the license plate renewal fee in March, the actual renewal process is still required.
At that time, the province said dropping these fees would save drivers $120 annually.
OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt warned drivers they could face a large fine if they fail to renew their license plate.
Some drivers in Ontario were fined $500 for not doing so.
