Dr. Paul Hanam, famous and well-known in Canadian emergency medicine and Head of the Emergency Medicine Department and Medical Director of the program at North York General Hospital, suddenly passed away on Saturday.
Hanam reportedly collapsed while running, according to a friend and fellow emergency physician Dr. Howard Owens in a tweet.
"Olympic sailor, marathon runner, family man, ED director at NYGH, a kind man who suddenly died today."
North York General Hospital also shared the news in a tweet. They said, describing Hanam as "a highly respected and trusted colleague, dedicated to patients and the community."
Hanam was also known and beloved in East Toronto where he previously served two terms as Emergency Director at Michael Garron Hospital in East York.
Dr. Paul Hanam served as Head of Emergency Medicine for more than 10 years in the East end.
His death was a huge shock to the medical community and the area as a whole, and the funeral has not yet been announced or how it will be arranged.
