The final batch of tickets for Pope Francis' Mass at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on July 26 will not be issued as originally scheduled.
Organizers announced before the weekend that tickets will be released to the public on Friday, so that Indigenous partners can organize their attendance.
Additionally, recent federal funding announcements may allow new groups with a strong desire to participate in Pope Francis' visit, an opportunity for mobilization.
"The delay in issuing the final batch of tickets will provide an additional window for Indigenous participation, while also ensuring that all available stock, including any seats not reserved by Indigenous partners or the group, is offered to the public on Friday, July 22, 2022."
Two batches of tickets – about 26,000 – have already been released and were claimed within minutes of their availability.
The number of tickets available in the third and final batch on Friday will depend on the number of tickets claimed by Indigenous people.
Francis arrives in Canada on Sunday at Edmonton International Airport.
The Pope also referred to the anticipated visit in his Vatican speech on Sunday and asked the faithful to pray for Indigenous people who have been mistreated by members of the Catholic Church. He said, "Thank God... it can contribute to the path of healing and reconciliation."
