Drivers in Ontario will soon not need to renew their license plates, as the government moves to an automated system.
Premier Doug Ford made this announcement today in response to a question from the Toronto Star newspaper, which reported this week that there are more than one million expired license plates on the roads.
Ford's company canceled the annual $120 renewal fees in 2022, and since then, law enforcement officials have said that far fewer drivers remember to renew each year.
Ford said today that a bill will be introduced to the legislature when it resumes its session next week to make these renewals automatic, and in this way, "drivers will never have to worry about it at all."
His office added that it will be part of a larger bill that also includes a procedure requiring any future provincial carbon pricing plan to be subject to a referendum.
