Kitchener Centre in Ontario now has a new representative in the regional legislature.

Islin Clancy of the Green Party won the by-election by a wide margin. Clancy received a total of 11,334 votes, more than five thousand votes ahead of the New Democratic Party candidate Debbie Chapman, who came in second.

The seat was previously held by the New Democratic Party. After Clancy's victory, there will now be two Green Members of Provincial Parliament in the Ontario legislature. Green Party leader Mike Schreiner represents the Guelph team.

Party leader Mike Schreiner and Green MPP for Kitchener Centre Mike Morris were also present to celebrate the Green Party's victory.

A total of 18 candidates ran in the by-election, the largest number of candidates from a single riding in any election in Ontario. The candidate for the governing Progressive Conservative Party in the province, Rob Elliott, came in third with 3,109 votes, and Liberal candidate Kelly Stiss came in fourth with 1,817 votes.

Also, the New Blue candidate Paul Simos came in fifth with a majority of 536 votes.

There are 87,151 registered voters in this election according to Elections Canada, with 27.1% of people voting in the by-election.

Clancy is a councillor in the city of Kitchener. Winning the provincial legislature seat means she will have to resign from her councillor seat, as under the Ontario Municipal Act, she cannot represent two seats at the same time.
