This new project that the Ontario government seeks to present - for free* - will help workers in the electricity industry develop their careers, especially since it is a vital sector.

Ontario is investing $2.7 million to support an innovative project that will help 65 workers in the electricity industry improve their skills and meet the demand for qualified electricians in Eastern Ontario. This will be led by KE Electrical.

This free program will provide participants with the necessary training to advance from worker to apprentice, from apprentice to skilled worker, and from skilled worker to foreman. This will allow these workers to earn a better living while helping to fill the shortage of skilled labor in Ontario.

In this regard, Premier Doug Ford said: "We are witnessing an unprecedented labor shortage across the province, with thousands of unskilled trade jobs. Programs like this help ensure we have the skilled labor needed to build the homes, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure projects our province needs."

It is noted that the province needs at least 1,600 additional electricians – and this number is expected to increase in the coming years, as one in every three skilled workers is 55 years or older and approaching retirement. This project will allow new and returning KE Electrical employees to participate in 8,500 hours of hands-on training focused on developing technical skills and capabilities, health and safety, professional development, and other essential skills for this industry.

For his part, Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, said: “Working as an electrical technician is a specialized career that accompanies its owner for life. That is why our government will continue to invest in innovative training programs that help people acquire the skills they need to advance in their careers and build Ontario.”

In addition to helping 65 men and women take the next step in their careers in a sector with rising demand, the program will help find electricians the province needs to carry out its strategic infrastructure plans. Furthermore, this free training will be offered to all employees throughout Eastern Ontario, and mileage and other travel expenses will be reimbursed.

For his part, Gordon Kemp, President of KE Electrical Ltd, said: “These funds will allow us to refine, retrain, and develop our workforce skills so that we can better serve communities. Together, we are breaking down barriers and stereotypes so Ontario becomes a leader in training the next generation of skilled workers.”

This project is funded by the Skills Development Fund, a $700 million initiative that supports innovative programs linking job seekers to the skills and training they need to find well-paying jobs near their homes.
