Ontario supports low-income seniors by proposing to expand the Guaranteed Annual Income System for nearly 100,000 seniors and to index the program annually to combat inflation.
It was announced that the expansion of the Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) will be part of the 2023 budget to build a strong province, and as proposed, it will take effect in July 2024.
In this regard, Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance, said: "Our government is working for seniors in Ontario who built this province so they can live with comfort and dignity. By expanding the Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) and indexing it annually, we are providing financial support to more low-income and vulnerable seniors and ensuring that when living costs rise due to inflation, our support increases as well."
It is worth noting that the provincial government is also investing nearly one million dollars over three years to expand the Seniors Safety Line, available only in English. This regional resource will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to assist seniors who suffer from abuse or are at risk of abuse, and connect them with trained counselors who can provide support and assistance.
Raymond Cho, Minister of Seniors and Accessibility in Ontario, also added: "Our government works tirelessly for seniors in Ontario; they deserve stable and reliable programs, services, and income, now and in the future. Increasing our investments in RRAG helps the most vulnerable seniors. This shows that our government seeks to achieve well-being for seniors because they deserve dignity and respect."
In addition to supporting seniors, the government’s plan takes important steps to build Ontario by promoting economic growth, attracting new jobs and investments, and accelerating major infrastructure projects. Through hard work and skilled workers, keeping costs low, and delivering better services, the Ontario government is building a strong province that benefits seniors, families, and businesses.
