Ontario's Chief Medical Officer says the province's current vaccination strategy is working against monkeypox and cases of the virus appear to be stabilizing.

Dr. Kieran Moore says the province has vaccinated more than 20,000 people against monkeypox, with the priority group being gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who meet certain criteria.

But some say the province's vaccination strategy is not doing enough to protect those living in homeless shelters, pointing to a recent case found in a shelter in Toronto.

Diana Chan McNally, a community worker at the Toronto Drop-In Centre, says monkeypox vaccines should be widely available to those living in shelters given the nature of the places and the fact that those living there may share their belongings.

The Toronto Public Health has set up pop-up monkeypox vaccine clinics in the shelter where a case was recently reported, which Moore says is part of Ontario's "ring vaccination" strategy targeting those who may have been exposed to a known case.

Public Health Ontario reported a total of 449 confirmed monkeypox cases in the province as of Thursday, with more than 77 percent of cases reported in Toronto.
