Nova Scotia sets a five-gigawatt target for offshore wind energy by 2030

Nova Scotia announced on Tuesday its intention to make offshore wind power a major driver of future energy supplies, setting a goal of five gigawatts generated from offshore turbines by 2030.

Prime Minister Tim Houston told reporters that the ambitious plan to introduce offshore wind power will triple the province's current total energy production of 2.5 gigawatts.

Houston said, "The wind is there." "It is up to us to have the leadership and courage to harness it."

The premier said that while Nova Scotia is in a race with other provinces and even countries around the world to develop the offshore wind industry, the province has suitable wind speeds to be competitive.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, Nova Scotia is perfectly suited for offshore wind development with optimal speeds of 10 to 11 meters per second spread over wide areas of mostly shallow waters due to the continental shelf.

Houston said, "Canada as a country is very behind." "We currently have no offshore wind production, so that's a problem.

I am focused on making Nova Scotia a leader and changing that." He said the idea is to develop wind power to produce green hydrogen for use in the province and for export, adding that his government will develop a green hydrogen action plan to be released in 2023.
