The military council in Niger said on Friday that it has canceled a number of military cooperation agreements with France following the military coup that the country experienced last week.

France has between 1,000 and 1,500 troops in Niger to help counter a "rebellion waged by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorists in the region."

One of the members of the military council stated that in response to France's position and its reaction to the situation in Niger, "the National Council for the Protection of the Homeland decided to repeal cooperation agreements with this country in the field of security and defense."

The military council pledged in a statement to respond "immediately" to "any external aggression." It also ended the missions of the ambassadors of France, the United States, Nigeria, and Togo. Additionally, it halted the broadcasting of French media outlets.

Supporters of the military council in Niger organized protests in the capital Niamey on Thursday in response to foreign sanctions, while France condemned the new authorities' suspension of broadcasting for two prominent French radio and television stations in the country.

Niger halted the broadcasting of two official French news stations, France 24 and Radio France Internationale, on Thursday, prompting the French Foreign Ministry to denounce the move.
