Google said it will continue to remove Canadian news links from its search engine by the end of the year.
The company was part of the regulatory process for the Online News Act, which requires tech giants to pay media in Canada for news content they share or reuse on their online platforms.
Google stated that the draft regulations for implementing the bill did not address the company’s concerns.
Google spokesperson, Shay Burd, said in a statement: "We still have serious concerns that the fundamental issues may not ultimately be resolved through regulation, and changes to the law may be necessary." We have been and will remain engaged and transparent with the government about our concerns and look forward to the final regulations being published."
The company stated that changing the law may be necessary to keep news available in Canada.
The company did not specify what changes it wants in the law. The government will decide on this matter. However, they welcome the idea that changes will come through the liberal government's fall economic statement or the upcoming federal budget.
For her part, Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said that while the Online News Act is not perfect, the media landscape is changing so fast that the government cannot afford to wait.
St-Onge also added while speaking at the International News Minds Agency conference in Toronto on October 6: "We need to get our foot in the door and start doing this."
