A Swedish court issued the first ruling for extremism against a man convicted of burning the Holy Quran, documenting his crime on video and posting it online.
According to the Swedish TV channel SVT, this is the first case in the country where a court in Linköping considered the burning of the Quran as incitement to racial and religious hatred, where the convicted person received a suspended sentence and a fine.
The man had published a video in the autumn of 2020 with music, in which the Quran was burned and left near a mosque, and he was arrested and convicted of committing the crime.
According to the statement, the video used music linked to the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand in 2019, in which 51 people were killed. The video depicted "the Quran fried with bacon on the grill," underneath it papers with offensive writings about Muslims, and a damaged copy of the Quran and bacon was left outside a mosque in Linköping.
The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the man received a suspended sentence, and he is required to pay 800 kronor (about 73 dollars) to the victims' compensation fund.
