Earth Observatory of NASA released satellite images of an underwater volcano eruption. The image, taken on May 14 by the Operational Land Imager 2 on the Landsat 9 satellite, shows a column of discolored water emanating from the volcano.

The satellite is designed to capture high-resolution images of our planet. NASA said that the Kavachi volcano in the Solomon Islands is one of the most active underwater volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean.

The volcano is located about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of an island called Vangunu. Kavachi was nicknamed "Sharkano" after a 2015 mission to the site revealed the crater was an unlikely home to two species of sharks, indicating that large marine animals can exist in a harsh environment, enduring the hot and acidic waters.

The scalloped hammerhead and silky shark were among the multiple fish species observed by researchers living in the active volcano.

To look inside the Kavachi volcano crater, scientists deployed a camera at a depth of 164 feet (50 meters), according to Oceanography magazine.

The volcano erupts almost continuously, according to NASA, and steam and ash are often visible. The neighboring island was named after the sea god of the Gatokae and Vangunu peoples, and is sometimes referred to as Rejo te Kvachi, or "Kavachi Oven".
