Somedays, a Canadian pain relief company during menstruation, offers non-menstruating individuals a new perspective on how painful menstrual cramps can be.

Lux Berry, CEO and co-founder of Somedays, brought a menstrual pain simulator to the Calgary Stampede this year to show men and people without periods the levels of pain women experience during menstruation.

Berry said Tuesday in an interview on CTV Your Morning: "It was somewhat shocking to see how much empathy there was."

The simulator works by tightening muscles to mimic abdominal cramps, similar to what many experience during their periods while carrying out their daily activities.

Berry says, although menstrual pain is felt worldwide, it is often downplayed or ignored, despite its debilitating impact.

While many laughed seeing men briefly experience what chronic menstrual pain can be like, Berry said the hope is that this experience makes people more empathetic to the many different aspects of women's healthcare.

They said, "By opening the conversation with something that makes people laugh and is interactive, it can build a little real empathy because they feel what you feel, and it makes it easier to have those conversations and open dialogue."
