A man deliberately rammed his bus into a daycare near Montreal, today Wednesday, causing the death of two children and injuring others, according to the police.
Pierre Brochet, chief of police of the city of Laval in the Montreal suburbs, where the tragedy occurred, said: “We believe what happened was deliberate, but we do not know the motive.”
Brochet explained that the 51-year-old driver was stopped near the incident on suspicion of “murder and dangerous driving,” and was being questioned Wednesday afternoon, with no prior criminal record.
The police indicated that no charges have been filed against the individual so far, as the circumstances of the tragedy remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses reported that some parents who came to drop off their children at the daycare stopped the man who appeared “disturbed” and was “half naked.”
Rescue teams in Quebec told AFP that one of the victims was killed on the spot, while the second died after receiving medical care. There is no danger to the six other children who were admitted to the hospital, and no adult injuries were reported.
One parent told “Radio Canada” before breaking into tears: “I helped stop the driver who got off the bus”; according to his wife, the parents present at the moment of the incident saw the driver “deliberately ram the daycare.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed “shock,” stating: “We are all in shock,” adding: “I cannot imagine what the families are going through.”
