A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Minahasa Peninsula in northern Indonesia on Saturday, and there were no immediate reports or information available about injuries, damages, or casualties resulting from the earthquake.
It is noted that the Minahasa Peninsula in the Sulawesi region hosts one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, and the last earthquake to occur in the peninsula was in late February.
For its part, the German Research Centre for Geosciences reported that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake shook the Minahasa Peninsula in Indonesia's Sulawesi region on Saturday. It added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface.
The Indonesian geophysics agency also stated that this earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the same area in 2018 had caused a tsunami that led to widespread damage and fatalities.
Indonesia is located on what is known as the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific, where the convergence of tectonic plates causes significant seismic activity.
